This setup creates tension as she lives under the fear that her secret will somehow be discovered. There is still the problem of the read father of her child, who shows up after a period of time, with a clever blackmailing scheme that puts her in peril. We hear that they have never so much as seen a photograph of her so when the train derails and the couple are killed they assume that she must be their daughter-in-law and so pay for her medical care and give her and her newborn son a home.

This book has a clever premise, which I won’t give away, but suffers throughout – particularly at the beginning and end – from an overly melodramatic narrative that definitely dulls the fascination of seeing how the sort-of-heroine deals with her unique situation and the threats to the future of her and her child. Like I said, he is extraordinary. Woolrich writes pretty well, altho sometimes with a dated, purple streak, which gives the impression that he is trying to please readers of romance fiction who may have picked up the book on one of those spinning paperback racks one used to see in pharmacies.

I bought it for a film noir class, but we never got around to it, so I read it in my spare time, and I’m glad I did. The Cornell Woolrich Omnibus: Information from the French Common Knowledge. Despite the B-movie title, it felt to me most reminiscent of Nella Larsen or Jean Rhys in its rhythms. The suspense deaf unnerving as we see her life built on a monumental lie inevitably unravel.

It turned out that the dead Hazzards came from a rich family which thinks that Helen — whom they had never met — and her newly delivered infant son are all that is left of their family.

I was very glad to have read this. I liked the bleak tone so I will seek these out! Rather than receiving support from the father, instead she is given five dollars and a one-way train ticket back to her hometown. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. The premise is simple, the execution extremely difficult. Patrice wants to have that all-American small town life, but maybe it’s just not in the amrried.

But I get awfully tired of reading about the same happy hookers and highly capable, critical-but-nurturant wives all the time.

I read this book in the Centipede Books edition. Read in Crime Novels: This was okay overall, but I may stick to the movie versions of his work – there are a whole bunch I have not seen yet. There are some authors here that I am keen to try and in the case of Highsmith I have read Strangers on a Fead so I woolrrich at least already know I like her writing.
